CHAPTER 15

The rush was hard to give up, but Roger pulled away from his deep drink. Kit leaned back against the couch they’d found in a private corner upstairs. Their eyes were hooded, lust clouding their focus. Roger closed his eyes. His magic continued to coax Kit’s lust. They’d wanted it to ease the pain of the bite. The act was over, so Roger swallowed his power down. His head was clear again, and Kit’s would be too. He opened his eyes.

Kit grinned at him lazily. The bite mark on their wrist was already closed. In no time, it would disappear. That was the advantage of shifter healing. Kit noticed him watching the spot and rubbed their thumb across it. “Your handiwork won’t stay for long.”

“Some believe that a blessing,” Roger said. Speaking felt easier. His throat was relaxed. It was like a switch had flipped in his mind. Suddenly, there was brightness where everything had dimmed. Coherent thoughts strung together in long lines.

Which brought regrets. Doubts.

He gave Kit his best smile as he put his arm across the back of the couch. Running off to find Wright would be bad form. Even among the donors, he had a reputation to protect. He held up the orange chit in his left hand.

In a smooth motion, Kit clasped their hand around it and took it from Roger. They scooted closer. “I don’t have anything else to do tonight. I could show you around town. Zack, too. I wouldn’t mind the three of us getting closer.”

“You are lovely, but I’m not considering associations in that way,” Roger said.

“You and Zack aren’t … associating?” Kit asked.

“That’s a private matter.”

Kit danced the chit around their fingers in a show of dexterity. “Is he your only pet? Don’t you need more?”

“That sounds incredibly like an offer,” Roger replied.

“I am offering anything you want, sir.”

Roger leaned in. “With the wrong vampire, that is dangerous.”

Kit leaned in in return. “That kind of vampire doesn’t let their human walk around with silver on them.”

Roger held back that he hadn’t known Wright had silver on him. He hadn’t even thought to double-check Wright for his enchanted dagger. The boy could have snuck it into the donor house. If he used it on anyone, Roger would be to blame. The silver was bad enough.

“He’s cautious,” Roger said. “I appreciate Nell’s domain, but he is new to the life.”

“I know.” Kit motioned between them. “To drop talking around it, we’re not fucking, are we?”

“We’re not.”

“Then I’m going to see if my usual booty call is interested before this sex buzz wears off.” Kit held up the chit. “Thank you.”

“Thank you for sharing,” Roger replied.

“Keep me in mind. Not right away, but I’d be willing to do it again.” Kit stood and headed away from the couch.

Roger took a long moment to center himself. The sounds of the nearby people were easier to filter through. The second floor was quieter than the first as vampires fed on the willing. Soft moans and the occasional sucking noise were common.
